On January 29th, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management  announced a Request for Information and Interest for “Commercial Leasing for Outer Continental Shelf Minerals Offshore Alaska” opening a 30-day public comment period that will close on March 2, 2026. Deep-sea mining is a speculative and experimental industry that has not proven commercially viable anywhere in the world. The proposed extraction methods would directly destroy seafloor habitat and risk widespread, irreversible harm to deep-sea species. Mining operations would create large underwater sediment plumes that can travel hundreds of miles beyond the extraction site. These sediment plumes, along with noise and other pollution from mining operations, could severely impact all parts of the food chain from microscopic organisms to fish and marine mammals relied upon by Alaska’s communities.
